the music tells the story – true love ways…

There is story to be heard in not only the words but the music too if we listen closely.  My dad taught me that.  And he did it with this song.  “True Love Ways” by the great Buddy Holly is an exceptionally simple song and another one of his favorites.  It’s message is clear.  It’s melody straightforward and uncomplicated.  But the strings, the instrumentation and phrasing that supports such simplicity is quite sweet and beautiful and completes the thoughts that are shared.  It is the poetic end to each phrase and shapes this song, really providing emphasis to the meaning of each line when the violins start singing.  Anytime we’d hear this song, of course Dad would sing along, but he would always punctuate with his hands like a conductor does in front of his symphony orchestra at each entry by the instruments.  To him, that was the most important part of the song.

I remember watching him “conduct” like a grand master, feeling every little nuance, understanding every phrase and knowing where it was leading.  It was in those moments I learned how such little details can touch our hearts and our soul, how they can move us and make us feel.  I feel music today due to this lesson.  I feel many other things today due to this lesson as well.  In this he taught me to pay attention to the expression, the nuance, the details of things, taking it all in and appreciating the mastery of it.  All because he felt it.

My dad didn’t play any instruments, he didn’t even know how to read music so all he had was the feeling.  So he would listen to it carefully and he would feel, just like we all can and do.  That was the lesson here for me.  It is all in how I listen to something or someone, regardless of pre-existing knowledge, that makes me and/or them feel a certain way and that is what makes all the difference.  Whether it’s through music or kind words, good deeds or even silence.  Not only hearing but truly listening, paying attention to the details, and feeling… it is the only way to understand every phrase, complete each thought, and know where it will lead…

Just you know why
Why you and I
Will by and by
Know true love ways

Sometimes we’ll sigh
Sometimes we’ll cry
And you know why
Just you and I know true love ways

Throughout the days
Our true love ways
Will bring us joy to share
With those who really care

Sometimes we’ll sigh
Sometimes we’ll cry
And you know why
Just you and I know true love ways

Throughout the days
Our true love ways
Will bring us joy to share
With those who really care

Sometimes we’ll sigh
Sometimes we’ll cry
And you know why
Just you and I know true love ways
