the music tells the story – dreamlover…

After some weepy eyes for me last night as I wrote of my father’s favorite song, I thought I’d lighten it up a bit today.  No musical story of ours is complete without the famous Bobby Darin.  One of my dad’s most favorite singers.  He loved songs like “Mack the Knife” and “Beyond the Sea”… but there was just something about “Dream Lover” that charged him up and had him dancing and singing like no other.  Maybe it was the syncopation of the alternating beats and voice, maybe it’s because it is simply a fun and catchy song to listen to and sing, maybe it was just that it was his favorite singer.  Whatever it was, I know anytime this song was put on that old stereo of his or heard on the radio, he would start to dance around singing and eventually pull me up to match him step for step and note for note.

I was not a good dancer and certainly not the singer he was, but it didn’t matter.  As a young girl I just was thrilled to dance with my dad, as any young girl would be.  To be the focus of his attention, the joy in his day.  To feel, for a brief three minutes, like I was the only one in the world he wanted to spend time with.  Those times of being twirled around by him, laughing, singing and having a good time… there is very little in my life and in my memories that matches those sweet moments.

The song… well, it could have been the “Macarena” for all I cared.  But the song took a man, usually known for his rigid routine, his emotional unavailability, and his many hours of working too hard, to a place where he was relaxed, where he had fun and smiled and laughed along with me, where we were what I had always hoped we could be.

What mattered to me was our two hearts, sharing and being together, seemingly beating in time with the music which had brought us together in the first place… that’s what mattered.  It’s what always matters.  I miss those moments with him.

Every night I hope and pray
A dream lover will come my way
A girl to hold in my arms
And know the magic of her charms
‘Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
My own (yeah-yeah)
I want a dream lover
So I don’t have to dream alone

Dream lover, where are you
With a love, oh, so true
And the hand that I can hold
To feel you near as I grow old
‘Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
My own (yeah-yeah, yeah)
I want a dream lover
So I don’t have to dream alone

Someday, I don’t know how
I hope she’ll hear my plea
Some way, I don’t know how
She’ll bring her love to me

Dream lover, until then
I’ll go to sleep and dream again
That’s the only thing to do
Till all my lover’s dreams come true
‘Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
My own (yeah-yeah, yeah)
I want a dream lover
So I don’t have to dream alone

Dream lover, until then
I’ll go to sleep and dream again
That’s the only thing to do
Till all my lover’s dreams come true
‘Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
My own (yeah-yeah)
I want a dream lover
So I don’t have to dream alone

Please don’t make me dream alone
I beg you don’t make me dream alone
No, I don’t wanna dream
