Today marks a week. One week down already of my sabbatical. This means that I only have five more weeks. Geez how the time is flying by. I knew it would, but I wish it would just slow down a little bit.
This was the first day of my time off that I spent entirely at the barn. I arrived at 8:30 a.m. and didn’t leave until about 7:45 p.m. The owner had some business to take care of today and so she asked if I could be out there to oversee things a little bit. The morning was spent feeding horses, cleaning stalls and water buckets, feeding baby goats, and cleaning and refilling just about every water trough on the property. I had some help from a couple of teenagers and one of the boarders in order to get it all done.
I left for a short bit at lunchtime to grab a bite to eat and returned to work Dolly. I made it a fairly short session today, but we spent some time in the indoor arena walking and going through some obstacles. Afterward I gave her an apple and brushed her for a little while and put some medicine on the cut that I found she had on the inside of her right hind leg last Thursday. It’s looking a lot better and so tomorrow I plan on doing some deeper work both from the ground and in the saddle. I’ll probably ride her for a little bit and then get off and do some desensitization work with bean bags and whatever other noisemakers I can find. Should be fun. Always a little exciting when she reacts. It’s also supposed to be a cooler weather tomorrow which also gets the horses more frisky and energetic so it should be all the more exciting… can’t wait.
