Tonight I was sitting at home after a stressful week with work and some personal things and a longtime friend of mine called. Just at the right time. He always seems to know just the right time to call and check in.
He is one of those friends that you can always count on, no matter what. This is a friendship where you know each other so well that it doesn’t even matter what you talk about anymore. It doesn’t matter how you say things whether in frustration or fun… those friends just always get you. They understand you, know where you are coming from, require no explanations. We grew up together and he has always been a big part of my life. He lives several hundred miles away now and I miss him.
Anyway, he sat and listened to me vent for nearly two hours about my stuff. And even as I apologized for totally monopolizing the entire conversation withmy stuff he simply said “no worries, what are friends for?” I mean can you really beat that? What a friend.
I think we really underestimate the importance of listening. I know I do. I think I try to be a good listener, but I also know I fail miserably at times.
Sometimes, as we all know, you just need a listening ear and I must say tonight one of my friends helped me deal with some things by simply doing just that. No complaining, no impatience, no advice… simply listening.
